Trump considers Ali pardon; late boxer's lawyer says no need

  • Trump floats possibility of pardoning Muhammad Ali

But a lawyer for his family said it was "unnecessary" as Ali was pardoned by the Supreme Court in 1971.

Trump also posthumously pardoned Jack Johnson, the first black boxing champion, who was convicted more than a century ago of transporting a white woman across state lines for "immoral purposes" in an era of racial segregation. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned his conviction in 1971.

Ali was arrested at the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station in Houston, went on trial and was convicted of draft evasion.

Trump told reporters Friday his team is now "looking at literally thousands" of people who have come to their attention because they've been treated unfairly or their sentences are too long. "His memory is very popular now, I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali".

"No, I'm not thinking about pardoning OJ", Trump said.

Earlier this week, Mr Trump commuted the life sentence of a woman whose cause was championed by Kim Kardashian West. Now, it looks like Trump is going on a pardoning spree.

Pep Guardiola brands Yaya Toure's accusation 'a lie'
Numerous players have come out in support of Guardiola since Toure's comments and now the manager himself has finally responded. Toure won three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups during an eight-year spell at the Etihad.

"OJ?" asked a reporter, referring to football star OJ Simpson, who was found guilty of kidnapping and armed robbery years after being found not guilty in the deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Lyle Goldman, 25. Additionally, in 1977, President Jimmy Carter pardoned everyone who evaded the draft during the Vietnam War.

But does Ali need a posthumous pardon? They never called me n--r, they never lynched me, they didn't put no dogs on me, they didn't rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father.

But posthumous pardons are symbolic by their very nature, and if granted Ali's would be just the fourth granted in history. "If he accepts Muhammad Ali being right for what he did, and want to give him a pardon, then that pardon should be going out to all those people who kneel". The Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 1971, concluding that his religious objection to military service was valid.

CNN reported on Wednesday that the White House has assembled the paperwork to pardon dozens of people, according to two sources with knowledge of the developments.

"I'm thinking about somebody that you all know very well". His license to fight was also reinstated and Ali spent the next 10 years fighting professionally, cementing his reputation as one of the country's most prominent athletes.

He said he has a list of 3,000 potential names who are being considered for clemency.
