President Donald Trump listens during a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong ahead of a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, June 11, 2018, in Singapore.

"We were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit, and I would like to thank you for that", Kim, speaking through an interpreter, told Lee.

"I think things can work out very nicely", Trump said briefly of Tuesday's summit, before a lunch with Singapore's prime minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Officers combed the city on Sunday, from the old colonial section to the modern skyscrapers to the hotel on nearby Sentosa island where Trump and Kim will actually meet.

North Koreans were offered a rare glimpse into their reclusive leader's schedule on Monday after the tightly controlled state media issued surprisingly detailed reports of his trip to Singapore.

Kim and Ri both joined Kim Jong Un for the April 27 inter-Korean summit, and Kim Yong Chol recently traveled to the U.S.to meet Secretary of State Mike Pompeo before delivering a letter from Kim Jong Un to Trump at the White House. After shaking hands with Singapore's foreign minister, Kim sped through the streets in a limousine, two large North Korean flags fluttering on the hood, surrounded by other black vehicles with tinted windows and bound for the luxurious and closely guarded St. Regis Hotel.

North Korea's state-owned newspaper Rodong Sinmun announced the summit to its people on Monday, saying the talks would focus on 'establishing new DPRK-U.S. relations... building a durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula...realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern'.

The comment can be dismissed as casual optimism characteristic of the USA leader, but the watchers interpreted it as suggesting that the atmosphere in their last-minute negotiations on denuclearization may not be discouraging.

Later, Pompeo shared a picture of Trump speaking with the staff of the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.

Officials remain uncertain what will come out of Tuesday's unprecedented summit, the first of its kind between a sitting US president and the leader of North Korea.

The Singapore government offered itself as a neutral site for the first-ever meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader.

"And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again", Trump said.

On Wednesday, the summit was declared an "Enhanced Security Special Event" by the Minister for Home Affairs under the Public Order Act.

Among those representing the United States at the lunch were Secretary of Secretary Mike Pompeo, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Adviser John Bolton.

Trump had called Kim "Little Rocket Man" and threatened to unleash "fire and fury like the world has never seen" on North Korea as it conducted several ballistic missile tests in defiance of global warnings.

The tone heading into the meetings is positive, but the risk that things will go awry is also very real.

But many, if not all analysts, say that this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and that the weapons are seen as the only protection he has. China and South Korea would have to sign off on any legal treaty. Any deal would likely depend on North Korea's willingness to open its facilities for inspection. While hostilities ended with an armistice in 1953, no peace treaty has been signed yet.
