Hundreds of migrants stranded at sea as Italy, Malta close doors

  • 629 migrants on ship in limbo after Italy Malta refusal

The ship, with 123 unaccompanied minors, 11 other children and seven pregnant women aboard, is waiting in global waters between Italy and Malta, which has also refused to take them in.

Italy's new interior minister, Matteo Salvini announced on Sunday that all Italian ports were closed to the rescue boat, called Aquarius.

The rescuers say those on board Acquarius include 123 unaccompanied minors, 11 children, and 7 pregnant women.

Italy's former ambassador to Malta has urged the two countries to tone down their rhetoric and seek a common solution to the fate of the Aquarius migrant ship.

Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte said he personally contacted Malta's prime minister, Joseph Muscat, to "explicitly at least take on the human assistance of persons in difficulty aboard the Aquarius". "France pushes people back at the border, Spain defends its frontier with weapons", Mr Salvini wrote on Facebook.

In another tweet he says, "Today even the ship Sea Watch 3, a German NGO and the Dutch flag, is off the coast of Libya waiting to bring the umpteenth load of immigrants, to Italy".

Malta on Sunday reiterated its refusal to accept the ship, ignoring calls from Rome. Salvini had earlier issued a joint statement with Italian Transportation Minister Danilo Toninelli of the 5-Star Movement, saying Malta "cannot continue to look the other way when it comes to respecting precise worldwide conventions on the protection of human life".

In an official statement, the Maltese government said: "The rescue by NGO boat Aquarius was conducted in the Libyan Search and Rescue region and coordinated by Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) Rome".

The standoff marked the first display of Italy's get-tough immigration policy under the right-wing League.

For years the European Union has largely ignored Italy's rising fury at being left to deal with the migration crisis (even when it came from more politically acceptable figures like Matteo Renzi) but with Mr Salvini in charge, that may no longer be possible.

And the crisis between the Mediterranean countries may be far from being over, as Italian newspaper Repubblica reported that 800 more people have been saved by both Italian and global boats in Libyan waters overnight.

In the meantime some in Italy have offered to take in the migrants, with the mayor of Taranto, Rinaldo Melucci, saying that the Calabrian port city was "ready to embrace every life in danger".

Mr Salvini says he is considering action against organisations rescuing migrants at sea.

SOS Mediterranee said the crew of the Aquarius were still at sea and awaiting instructions.

However, the ship has been allowed to dock in the Sicilian capital, after Leoluca Orlando, the mayor of Palermo, defied the new Italian populist government's orders.

It also said it requested help from the coastguard in Malta to send boats to aid the rescue mission but Malta refused.
