"We are not there yet and we need a little more time to get it all together, but I expect we will be there tomorrow (Saturday for qualifying)".

Christian Horner was encouraged by the pace showed by both Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo during Qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, with both drivers within four-tenths of a second of the pole position time around a Circuit Gilles Villeneuve thought of as a power track.

"I'm really exhausted of all the comments about me - that I should change my approach", he said.

Traditionally unable to generate sufficient heat into the softest compounds as quickly as its rivals, particularly Ferrari, yesterday saw Mercedes, and particularly Lewis Hamilton, pay the price, as Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen claimed the front row for today's Canadian Grand Prix.

"It's hard to have a clear picture of how it will pan out, but we believe we made the right choice for the start of the race", he added, referring to Ferrari's decision to start on Ultrasofts. "It was especially nice on my last lap to see all the Canadian flags waving to me".

The teams contest a race with their own rafts, built from parts found in the garages, across the rowing lake on the island that hosts the circuit, but Ferrari said they would not take part because they needed to go back and rest in their hotel.

The territory has been controlled by Hamas for more than a decade, during which it has fought three wars against Israel. Israel said it was defending the frontier against crowds that threw stones and burned tyres in an attempt to cross.

In the final five laps, Hamilton pushed Ricciardo hard in the battle for fourth but the Australian - victor at Monaco last time out - just held on with the four-time world champion forced to relinquish his standings lead as he recorded his lowest placing of the season. "The auto was working well, but we are still lacking a bit of top speed and you could see that in the long runs". "But it showed in Monaco that we have a great auto".

Once the main teams emerged, Vettel was soon quickest for Ferrari before swapping fastest laps with Raikkonen as the Mercedes men struggled to keep pace. That form then carried into Sunday as he led the field away from pole position at the race start.

"In the race, it all calms down a bit, which is why in general we are always a bit more competitive".

Kimi Raikkonen had been third after the first runs in Q3, but ran wide onto the grass exiting Turn 2 on his second set of hypersofts and was forced to abort the lap.

"(We're) not yet there", said Vettel. "We've seen this year it's very close between the three teams and the six drivers so we'll see, but for sure if you start on pole you want to win".
