McCain to allies: 'Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't'

The comments deliver on Trump's promise during the 2016 presidential campaign to end trade deals and security treaties that he has said benefit America's allies at the nation's expense.

Trump planned to leave the summit on Saturday before it discussed climate change and the health of oceans, underlining fractures in the G7 exacerbated by US trade tariffs.

Before heading to the summit, he had engaged in a bitter back-and-forth with both leaders over Twitter, criticizing Canada and the European Union for their unfair trade practices.

Outside, protesters urged the G7 states, which make up around half of the world's GDP, to focus on economic justice.

Trump had come to Quebec insisting on his long-standing claim that America has been exploited for too long by existing trade arrangements - and he was met by counterparts equally determined to protect the "rules-based" global system.

The picture, snapped Saturday by German government photographer Jesco Denzel, shows a standing Merkel with her hands firmly planted on a table staring down at Trump, who is seated with his arms folded and eyes glaring.

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump told reporters in a short but stern remark. He reiterated his longstanding view that the USA has been taken advantage of in global trade, adding, "We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing and that ends".

"If they thought they were going to lecture Trump on the glories of free trade, they got a rude awakening".

The first was rescued by Putintseva's lucky net cord but the second was converted with a backhand into the open court. Breaking that habit has been part of a larger maturing process that boils down to this: be your own boss.

But Trump said that the notion that the G7 summit was in any way contentious was "fake news", telling reporters Saturday that the conference had been "so wonderful".

A proposal by United States President Donald Trump, that Russian Federation should re-join the annual gathering of the seven advanced economies of the world has caused tensions within the group, with the proposal not having been well received by the remainder of the group's leaders.

This most recent awkward and intense handshake - which left Trump with that notable white thumbprint - took place during the annual G7 summit. If the USA can not reach a new trilateral agreement, Trump said, then it may seek separate trade agreements with the two countries. And while that's a fair target for any free trader, it missed the point that neither Mr. Trump nor the United States is a free-trader on dairy products or agriculture. "We will win that war 1,000 times".

The six-plus-one tone of the gathering in Quebec means the leaders from Canada, Britain, the United States, France, Germany Italy and Japan are unlikely to issue a joint statement, too sharply divided on trade or the environment to reach consensus. But one image may have been a more realistic look into how some negotiations "really" went.

But Trump appeared to take Trudeau's criticism personally, and denounced the prime minister hours after he departed the G7 summit on Saturday.

Fox Business contributors James Freeman and Kristina Partsinevelos discuss President Trump's upcoming meeting with North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un and the president's recently imposed tariffs.

With Trudeau, Trump joked that "Justin has agreed to cut all tariffs and all trade barriers between Canada and the United States".
