  • Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

US President Donald Trump and Group of Seven leaders had a bitter exchange over trade tariffs, ratcheting tensions at a summit that he planned to leave early on Saturday before talks on climate change and the health of oceans.

A subsequent visit in April this year warranted only a working lunch for the German leader, several days after fellow European Union leader Mr Macron got the full, formal state dinner treatment from Mr Trump. "He is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip".

Trudeau has used the word "insulting" several times in the last couple of weeks to describe Trump's tariffs, as the prime minister has taken issue with the fact they're being applied on the premise that Canada poses a national security threat to the U.S.

Speaking on Saturday during a rare solo news conference, Trump said he pressed for the G7 countries to eliminate all tariffs, trade barriers and subsidies in their trading practices.

At his closing press conference, Trudeau called US steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs. Trump as a result did not sign onto the joint statement concluding the meeting.

All seven countries agreed to a joint statement on artificial intelligence, global trade, middle class growth, innovation, girls' education, and defending democracies from foreign intrusions.

"We have a very really good relationship, very special", said Trump who recently hosted Macron for a state visit - the first since the American president came to power.

He wrote on his Twitter profile: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the U.S. massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers".

Trudeau pledged to impose new tariffs on the imported USA goods to defend Canadian workers.

Mrs May added: "President Trump and I had a brief word here at the summit about how he is looking forward to his visit to the United Kingdom and I look forward to welcoming him to the United Kingdom".

The Prime Minister said the United Kingdom still wanted to discuss a post-Brexit trade deal with the U.S. and said Mr Trump was still looking forward to July's visit to Britain.

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that. he 'will not be pushed around.' Very dishonest & weak", he added.

In interviews on CNN on Fox News, Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, and one of his top aides on trade, Peter Navarro, slammed Trudeau with a series of disparaging adjectives, from "amateurish" to "dishonest", and accused him of a backstabbing "betrayal" of the president.

Within minutes of the official release of the document, Trump attacked Trudeau online over what he described as the prime minister's "false statements" during the closing news conference - and the president announced the U.S. would no longer endorse the communique.

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump told reporters in a short but stern remark.

"You say the U.S. President doesn't care at all". Macron said Thursday on Twitter, "The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be".

"It's going to change", said Trump.

Trump clashed with Trudeau after the prime minister said Canada would enact retaliatory tariffs in response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
