Porsche's commitment to Taycan variants comes as part of a wider investment in the brand's electrification strategy.

The Taycan will be the first of Porsche's electric models but the carmaker has big plans to go the electric way.

Porsche says that "Taycan" means the equivalent of "spirited young horse", which is a reference to what lies at the heart of the Porsche crest.

When Porsche back in 2015 first revealed its multi-year plan to develop an all-electric sports auto, it called the forthcoming vehicle the Mission E. The company, which is part of the Volkswagen Group, now offers several plug-in hybrid models and sold just over 900 of the Porsche 918 Spyder, a limited-edition plug-in hybrid supercar. Features such as the flared haunches, LED tail-light strip and coupe-like rear end will remain to echo the looks of the 911 sports auto.

Japan is also expected to take a less confrontational approach than its G7 peers, while still quietly pressing its case on trade. "Being open to technologies of the future doesn't mean we have to accept all their uses", he said.

"Our new electric sports auto is strong and dependable; it's a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomizes freedom", Porsche executive board chairman Oliver Blume said at a ceremony in Stuttgart celebrating the company's 70th anniversary. The four-door, four-seat Taycan's floor-mounted batteries point to an extremely low centre of gravity and handling to match more focused performance machines.

Porsche has officially announced the name of its new electric GT auto and it's Porsche Taycan (pronounced "tie-can"). Porsche is investing more than $1 billion to produce the Taycan, which will enter production by the end of 2019. Porsche executives have said that more electric cars will follow.

The Mission E concept generates almost 600bhp via a lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, one on each axle. The vehicle is expected to launch from zero to 62 miles per hour in under 3.5 seconds and up to 124 miles per hour in under 12 seconds.

Over-the-air updates will be possible on the Porsche Taycan, upgrading on-board infotainment systems and safety tech, but also offering to boost power if the customer wishes. The Mission E is now the Taycan, Porsche confirmed today. That means the vehicle will be able to add as much as 100 km of range in as little as four minutes.
