  • Land of ash Watch devastation left behind by Guatemala’s Fuego volcano

The fiery volcanic eruption in south-central Guatemala killed scores as rescuers struggled to reach people where homes and roads were charred and blanketed with ash.

The finger-pointing came as rain showers and the fear of mudslides hindered the search for possible survivors and the recovery of the dead from Sunday's eruption of Fuego (Spanish for fire). At least 197 people were listed as missing.

The remains of the 99 people have been sent to the morgues, while just 28 have been identified so far, Guatemala's National Forensic Sciences Institute (INACIF) announced on Wednesday. "There are places where you stick the pickaxe or rod in and we see a lot of smoke coming out and fire and it's impossible to keep digging because we could die", said 25-year-old rescuer Diego Lorenzana.

"At the request of the Government of Guatemala, we are sending emergency aid, including financial resources to help meet food, water, and sanitation needs for the affected population", the release said.

07 de junio de 2018, 10:52Seoul, Jun 7 (Prensa Latina) The South Korean government announced today that it will provide humanitarian aid estimated at 200,000 dollars to Guatemala to stabilize the lives of the victims and fix the damages caused by the eruption of the Volcano of Fuego. Some criticized the government's response and traveled into the disaster zones to search for loved ones themselves, digging with their hands or whatever tools they could get ahold of.

Eventually, the survivors will also need to find new homes. They have not been heard from since the eruption.

Salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon
The Illinois Department of Public Health said more people have been hospitalized from this outbreak compared to past ones. So far, 60 people infected with the outbreak strain have been reported in five states, including 32 cases in MI .

Residents of the town of El Rodeo, who had recently returned to their homes, were told to leave once again, and people were warned to avoid canyons and areas close to the volcano.

But 99 per cent of natural disaster problems happen in poor, informally built communities, Godoy said, and one complicating factor for towns like Los Lotes is that they have existed for decades.

Burn victims from Guatemala have arrived in Galveston to be treated at Shriners Pediatric Burn Hospital.

-- Six children flown to Texas for treatmentAUS Air Force C-17 carried six Guatemalan children badly burned in the volcanic eruption to Texas for treatment.

Disaster agency spokesman David de Leon says officials are analyzing the terrain to make a decision.

The children were among the victims of Sunday's eruption of the Volcano of Fire, which buried almost villages in superheated ash and debris.
