A Palestinian youth who was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers earlier on Wednesday in the village of Nabi Saleh, northwest of Ramallah, was identified as 21 years old Izzeddin Tamimi, according to the Ministry of Health.

One of the residents in the village who witnessed the incident told Haaretz that Tamimi had been wanted by Israeli security forces and they entered the village to arrest him.

Palestinians burned tires and Israeli troops fired heavy volleys of tear gas Friday to push back large Gaza crowds from the area of the fence separating the blockaded territory from Israel.

The specter of a mass border breach from the Palestinian enclave terrifies many Israelis and has caused high levels of support for the army's conduct despite an global outcry at the high number of deaths, including from Israel's allies.

Protester Fadi Saleh said the frequent marches have helped revive sympathies in the Arab world for the Palestinians, but that more could be done.

Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it to its capital, a move not recognized by most of the global community.
