Google CEO: Our AI won’t be used for harm

But Google's new limits appear to have done little to slow the Pentagon's technological researchers and engineers, who say other contractors will still compete to help develop technologies for the military and national defense. In March, news leaked that Google had quietly supplied AI technology to the Pentagon to help analyze drone video footage.

The AI principles represent a reversal for Google, which initially defended its involvement in Project Maven by noting that the project relied on open-source software that was not being used for explicitly offensive purposes.

More than 4,000 employees signed a petition calling for the cancellation of the Project Maven contract, citing Google's history of avoiding military work and worries about autonomous weapons. These are not theoretical concepts; they are concrete standards that will actively govern our research and product development and will impact our business decisions.

Aware of the potential controversy, in emails between executives last fall obtained by the New York Times, Google Cloud chief scientist Dr. Fei-Fei Li reportedly urged the company to avoid mention of AI "at all costs" when considering public mention of its involvement with Maven, and called weaponized AI "probably one of the most sensitized topics of AI - if not THE most".

The principles might bring to mind sci-fi legend Isaac Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics", which boil down to robots shouldn't harm humans, they should protect them. However, the AI principles do not make clear whether Google would be precluded from working on a project like Maven-which promised vast surveillance capabilities to the military but stopped short of enabling algorithmic drone strikes.

Google has said Duplex will identify itself so that wouldn't happen. Google seems to recognize the massive potential of AI technology, so it wants to start building systems with this framework in mind.

The China-led grouping includes India, Russia, Pakistan and several Central Asian countries, as well as Iran as an observer state. Armoured vans lined the streets of the coastal city of Qingdao as world leaders arrived Friday for the 18th annual summit.

Irina Raicu, director for the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, pointed out that Pichai also said, "Many technologies have multiple uses".

Google said Thursday that it would not let its artificial intelligence (A.I.) tools be used for deadly weapons or surveillance.

The rules, laid out by CEO Sundar Pichai, don't take a strong or controversial stand on the values that should underpin its technology: The ideal Google AI algorithm is socially beneficial, unbiased, tested for safety, accountable, private, and scientifically rigorous.

However, Google went on to confirm that they will continue to work with government bodies and military.

"Ultimately, how the company enacts these principles is what will matter more than statements such as this", Asaro said. The letter began with: "We believe that Google should not be in the business of war".
