Argentina confirm Enzo Perez as Manuel Lanzini's World Cup replacement

  • West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini set to miss World Cup with knee injury suffered in Argentina training

The attacking midfielder caught Sampaoli's eye with five goals in 29 appearances for West Ham last season.

"Manuel Lanzini suffered, in today's morning training, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee", the tweet from the Argentine national team read in part.

Argentina has called up Enzo Perez to replace Manuel Lanzini in their World Cup squad. An injury like this could also see him out for a portion of the EPL season with West Ham.

Twice world champions and beaten finalists in Brazil four years ago, Argentina face Iceland, Nigeria and Croatia in the group stage in Russian Federation this year. Lanzini would have been an option starting for Jorge Sampaoli, and given Argentina some speed and spark in a potential win or go home scenario.

Salah hopeful of making World Cup opener for Egypt
After saying his recovery is going well, Salah remembers "when I hit the floor, there was a mix of physical pain and worry". Of course, you can then say "right, we've got there, that's that", but for me it's not like that.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has said Argentina are well prepared for the World Cup and highlighted their individual quality as key.

West Ham will be pained to hear of the knee issue, which nearly certainly means he'll miss the beginning of the Premier League season, which is scheduled to get under way on August 11.

Sampaoli and his technical crew will now quickly decide the player who will replace Lanzini in the coming days.
