The new BlackBerry smartphone is here - and yes, it has a keyboard

  • TCL launches the BlackBerry Key2 for $649

Like its predecessor, the BlackBerry Key2 features an aluminum frame, a textured back, and a 4.5-inch display (1620×1080 resolution, 434 PPI, and 3:2 aspect ratio). However, BlackBerry's phones have proved nigh impossible to root, and the Key2 is subject to the same two years of regular security patches and commitment to instant hot fixes as the KeyOne and Motion before it. And now, most smartphones are touchscreen-only for typing.

That's not to say it's ugly though. How many more of these the duo will make is anyone's guess. It has largely accomplished this.

The keyboard has been redesigned. In fact, the company says it is "the most secure Android smartphone". There's no surprises here, as the spec sheet was leaked earlier this week. For the KEY2, that means Qualcomm's Snapdragon 660 with 2.2 GHz and 1.8 GHz octacores. The Key2 runs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 660 processor, which on its own should offer a modest boost in performance over the 625 in the KeyOne. Few people are likely to use BlackBerry's latest handset for gaming, as this is above all a productivity device.

Elsewhere, you've got 6GB of RAM, paired with either 64 or 128 GB of storage. Other specifications include a 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD card support, Wi-Fi, and 4G LTE.

Another area that's seen some love is the camera.

Putin addresses election meddling, possibility of third world war
Putin had been asked about the visa problems being experienced by billionaire Roman Abramovich in Britain. He will attend a business conference with envoys from both countries.

What do you think of the BlackBerry KEY2? Those cameras will be able to shoot 4K and 1080p videos. That's probably going to be adequate for anyone who buys this device for work.

The new device, which includes a physical keyboard under a 4.5 inch screen and runs the Android operating system updates the first BlackBerry Key released a year ago. Plus, the device comes hardened against attacks by default. It comes preloaded with DTEK by BlackBerry application that removes the complexity of security by providing an "at a glance" security meter.

The U.S. government and lawmakers have sought to limit sales of phones by larger Chinese phone makers ZTE Corp. and Huawei Technologies Co. But it will cost you $100 more than past year. In the United States, you can expect to pay $649. The Key2 will retail in silver and black, and while the fresh, simplified shape does the device a lot of favors, I expect the sleek and stealthy darker colorway to be a hit with the BlackBerry faithful.

Of course, we'll need to spend significantly more time testing the BlackBerry KEY2 before deeming it a hit, but until that in-depth review is done, we must admit we have a very good feeling about this bad boy.
