Pederson: Eagles moving on from White House saga

  • A guest at President Donald Trump's White House event on Tuesday apparently took a knee during the national anthem

What used to be one of the most innocuous photo-ops in sports is anything but.

The player union said in a statement that National Football League players "love their country, support our troops, give back to their communities and strive to make America a better place". "I can only speak for myself and as you know for a long time - two years in a row - I wasn't going to go there".

Over the weekend, as a team the Eagles hadn't fully decided which players, if any, would be attending the scheduled White House ceremony on Tuesday with President Donald Trump, a celebration of their Super Bowl LII victory. Trump has often blasted the NFL players who have kneeled for the national anthem, a protest that started in 2016 when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick did so to raise awareness of racism - more specifically, the killing of black men by police. He previously covered the Trump White House. Mrs. Trump's Communications Director, Stephanie Grisham, said the procedure was a success and without complication.

"Eighty players said [they would] attend. It's happened before, but never on this scale".

Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins delivered a powerful response to the defending Super Bowl champions' being disinvited to the White House without saying a word.

"The White House, despite sensing a lack of good faith, nonetheless attempted to work with the Eagles over the weekend to change the event format that could accommodate a smaller group of players", Sanders said in a statement.

"It's incredibly hard for these athletes, and not a choice they have imposed on themselves", Farred said.

Portugal must be realistic at World Cup, says captain Cristiano Ronaldo
Portugal enters this match after a 2-2 draw against Tunisia on May 28th and a 0-0 draw against Belgium on June 2. He also had one disallowed for offside before being substituted in the 75th minute on Thursday (Friday NZ time).

Can you remember the days before everything was politicized?

Several Eagles players ducked out early Wednesday.

Upon learning these facts, Trump made a decision to change the event so that it would be a celebration of the American flag, with Eagles fans and performances by the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus. Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling.

On Wednesday, coach Doug Pederson mostly kept to the same non-confrontational script, telling reporters that plenty had been said already, although he did take a moment to dispute the notion the team had done its fans a disservice.

The question could come up again soon, with the Washington Capitals on the verge of winning the Stanley Cup against the Vegas Golden Knights.

"I think it's a little bit disappointing right now that this country that we're so divided", Kelce said.

Only three of the Capitals are American.
