DOJ offers new briefing as lawmakers dispute Trump spy claim

  • House Speaker Paul Ryan speaks during a weekly news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington

"I run in the more conservative circles in the house, and I have never up until this point heard a single person talk about removing speaker Ryan from the speakership", Gaetz said.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday that President Donald Trump should not pardon himself, noting that no one in the United States is above the law.

Gowdy and Ryan were among a small group of lawmakers who were briefed last month in a classified setting on the FBI's use of the information after pressure from the White House to disclose more information to Congress.

He also dismissed Trump's conspiracy theory du jour, without actually uttering the word "Spygate", by saying he stands by Representative Trey Gowdy.

A House Intelligence Committee Report released late April "found no evidence that the Trump campaign colluded, coordinated, or conspired with the Russian government".

"Normally I don't comment on briefings, let me say it this: I think Chairman Gowdy's initial assessment is accurate". "We have some more digging to do". "We still have someone to answer questions". So don't tell me about Gowdy and Nunes.

WH to play national anthem in Eagles absence
But it was no secret that many Eagles are not fans of the President because of his stand on the national anthem protests. As CNN's Jake Tapper and others pointed out, no Eagles players took a knee during the regular season or postseason.

The briefings come as President Donald Trump has pushed the idea that the Federal Bureau of Investigation used a secret informant to spy on his 2016 presidential campaign.

He also issued a careful warning about Trump's recent assertion that he has the authority to pardon himself. Gowdy, once celebrated as the head of the House's Benghazi investigation, has been viciously attacked by fellow Republicans for pouring cold water on Spygate. Mr. Ryan backed Representative Trey Gowdy, Republican of SC, who pursued Hillary Clinton as the chairman of a special select committee on the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, but infuriated some Republican partisans by rebuffing Mr. Trump on "Spygate". But in a release, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr said the committee is cooperating with the department.

Was the alleged informant in the Trump campaign a spy? Rooney, who has served three terms in office and is not seeking re-election in November, told Politico on Wednesday.

He said the department had brought documents to the previous briefing, but "I didn't need to look at them because I knew what they were".

Democratic congressional leaders have said that giving Trump or his lawyers access to the materials would set a unsafe precedent for an ongoing investigation and have asked the Justice Department to let them know if they do give that access.
