U.S. and Top OAS Members Start Push to Suspend Venezuela

Carlos Trujillo, the US representative to the OAS, said the region's firm stance against Venezuela was long overdue.
Washington was joined by Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico and Peru in urging that President Nicolas Maduro's Caracas government be punished for what they see as his assault on democracy.
The document urges the Venezuelan government to hold free and fair elections and allow humanitarian.
The motion is expected to come up for a vote later Monday or on Tuesday.
He said that Venezuela denounces the OAS and is leaving the organization.
"This is the last OAS General Assembly where the Venezuelan foreign minister participates, we criticize the OAS and we withdraw", Maduro was quoted as saying by the Globovision channel. He delivered the strong rebuke following Pompeo's calls for the Organization of American States to suspend Venezuela from the hemispheric organization.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanded Monday the Organization of American States suspend Venezuela from the group until it restores constitutional order in the aftermath of what the United States says was the "sham" re-election last month of President Nicolas Maduro.
In Caracas, Maduro accused the United States of pressuring several countries in a "vulgar" way, claiming the USA was threatening to withdraw financial aid and even impose sanctions to get its way.
"Every time an OAS General Assembly approaches, we see the same movie", Maduro said during a function in Caracas.
In addition to suspension from the OAS - which carries penalties such as suspension from aid granted by the regional development bank, the Inter-American Development Bank - Pompeo called for increased regional sanctions on Venezuela.
The draft resolution, seen by AFP, calls on members to reject the results of last month's "unconstitutional" Venezuelan election.
In order to suspend Venezuela, the OAS would have to convene an extraordinary general assembly session of its members, beyond the current regular session.
The political crisis in Venezuela dominated the opening exchanges of the annual meeting in Washington, although Nicaragua also came under fire for its own harsh crackdown on opposition protesters.
"We are an independent nation, a free, sovereign nation and no empire will step foot in Venezuelan territory and impede the Venezuelan people from fulfilling their will, fulfilling their democracy and fulfilling their destiny of freedom", stated Arreaza.
