Miss America will no longer judge candidates "on their outward physical appearance", the beauty pageant has announced.

Accordingly, when the pageant is held this September, almost a year into the #MeToo era, it will no longer have a swimsuit competition.

Instead of running a swimsuit competition, the organization will feature "a live interactive session with the judges", the show reported, according to the organization.

The Miss America competition will no longer have the swimsuit or evening gown portions of the program, the organization announced Tuesday.

The evening gown section is also being axed, with contestants asked to wear something that makes them feel good and expresses their personal style instead.

In January, Carlson was named the first former victor to serve as the organization's leader and four other former Miss America winners were also named to the board. The Miss America & pageant system is outdated.

As someone who's been a leader in the fight against sexual misconduct, suing former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes who eventually resigned, Carlson said it's given her perspective on the competition's evolution.

Moving forward, "it's what comes out of their mouths that we care about", not the way in which women are perceived on a strictly somatic level.

She said the changes will help the organization be more inclusive and empowering for all women. While Miss America is part scholarship program, part pageant and has included talent and speaking portions in the past, it is, by far, a young ladies' beauty competition.

The changes will be in place for the next Miss America competition, set for September 9 in Atlantic City. She was elected chairwoman of Miss America in January.

She added, "We're experiencing a cultural revolution in our country with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard on many issues". Last year, the organization was rocked after sexist emails sent by Miss America officials denigrating former contestants' looks and intelligence were leaked. "It taught me a lifelong discipline beyond the Miss America stage".

Some changes to the pageant's format had been expected since the Miss America organization is now being led entirely by women for the first time.

Following the revelations, Carlson became part of an all-female leadership team at Miss America.
