In a comment also published by Nature Medicine, expert Laszlo Radvanyi from Canada's Ontario Institute for Cancer Research said the woman's response to the treatment was "unprecedented" for such advanced breast cancer.

"I hit the jackpot", said Perkins, who is now 52 and cancer-free more than two years later.

A decade-long study revealed that women who take a cancer recurrence gene test and yield results of low or intermediate risk of cancer recurrence - which effects more than 85,000 women a year - can forego chemotherapy altogether, according to CNN.

Rosenberg is quick to say the approach is not ready for commercial use, but he notes that CAR-T, a similarly personalized cancer treatment that works in blood cancers, that has been commercialized by companies including Kite Pharmaceuticals and Gilead Sciences. They were scored using the Oncotype DX genetic test, which assesses how the cancer is likely to respond to treatment. Following this "recalibration" of the genetic test, the researchers estimated that chemotherapy was not justified in 70% of cases of breast cancer.

Alan Melcher, professor of translational immunotherapy at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, who was not involved in the study said: "The work shows that even cancers like breast cancer, which don't have many antigens, are amenable to this sort of treatment".

Doctors were unsure, however, whether women in the medium-risk range were benefiting from chemotherapy or just experiencing the side effects. Generally, after surgery, such patients receive endocrine therapy, such as tamoxifen, which is created to block the cancer-spurring effects of hormones. Nine-year rates were similar for iDFS (83.3% vs 84.3%), DRFI (94.5% vs 95.0%), RFI (92.2% vs 92.9%), and OS (93.9% vs 93.8%) for the RS 11 to 25 arm.

The study used a gene test done on tumors to help decide whether a woman would benefit from chemo or if they could receive hormone therapy.

It is estimated that 3,000 to 5,000 women in the United Kingdom are likely to avoid chemotherapy every year following the trial.

This researchers split the middle-scoring group into two randomized subgroups: one treated exclusively with estrogen-blocking hormone therapy, and one with chemo combined with hormone therapy.

He also blasted Trump for canceling the event when some people from the team still wanted to go. The Eagles' owner refused to force his players to visit someone they don't respect.

Olufunmilayo Olopade, director of the Comprehensive Cancer Risk and Prevention Clinic at University of Chicago, said the study helps move forward the push for precision medicine - a philosophy of treating patients with the right medicine for their exact problems at a defined time.

While the U.S. doctors who developed the therapy can not be sure how much the infused immune cells contributed to her recovery, the use of pembrolizumab alone has not been very effective for advanced breast cancer in the past.

A woman with an aggressive form of breast cancer which defied chemotherapy and spread to other organs, was cured with an experimental treatment that triggered her immune system, researchers said Monday.

Yet the move away from chemotherapy has been hotly debated, with some doctors warning that chemo can save lives and that a "de-escalation" of treatment could be risky.

"Its findings will greatly expand the number of patients who can forgo chemotherapy without compromising their outcomes". The test looks for 21 specific genes associated with breast-cancer remission.

"We have to develop a new drug for every patient", Rosenberg said.

Judy Perkins, 49, had been given three months to live, but two years later there is no sign of cancer in her body.

The trial focused on HR positive, HER2-negative, node-negative breast cancer, which is the most common type of early stage breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in India. "After the treatment dissolved most of my tumours, I was able to go for a 40-mile hike", she added.
