The new tariffs imposed by Mexico on steel imports are significant for the USA, the biggest supplier to the country, providing over a third of all steel goods imported into Mexico, a net importer of steel products.

The Mexican tariffs, announced last week, officially took effect Tuesday. In 2017, it was the second-largest importer of USA steel and steel products, which will now face an additional 25 percent tariff, in line with what the US has imposed.

But the U.S.is getting more serious about the possibility.

Of the nearly $6.5 billion worth of pork exports from the U.S.in 2017, nearly a quarter - over $1.5 billion - was imported by Mexico, data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture showed.

"His preference now - and he asked me to convey this - is to actually negotiate with Mexico and Canada separately", Kudlow added.

Donald Trump's leading economic adviser says the US president wants to strike separate bilateral trade deals with Canada and Mexico rather than continue renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Kudlow told Fox News that President Donald Trump is now "seriously considering" bilateral trade talks with Mexico and Canada, an idea the president has previously floated, but added the United States will not pull out of NAFTA.

Mexico is hitting the US with tariffs of its own after the U.S. What's more, they can be narrowly tailored to fit the different economies of the two countries. "It provides the most certainty for American companies and is the best way we can sell "Made in America" products".

Mexico's list was created to hit at parts of the United States represented by high-profile Republicans, Mexican officials have said, including steel from Vice-President Mike Pence's home state of IN, motorboats from Sen.

VideoKey U.S. allies and trading partners voiced their anger with U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum, and powerful donors within the Republican Party announced efforts to support free trade. "Farmers need certainty and open markets to make ends meet".

"Since they know this is temporary, it is only in place until they get rid of the steel and aluminum tariffs, they say I better offer discounts and we can keep working".

"Escalating trade tensions that have resulted in today's tariffs put that growth at risk", she said.
