Apple reveals iOS 12 - The big upgrades

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook enters the stage for a keynote address during the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose California

Apple's iOS 12 includes updates to its Intelligence Tracking Prevention (ITP) tools with the latest offering blocking tracking features such as "Like" or "Share" buttons by default. Apps that support Siri Shortcuts will include a little button that says "add to Siri", much as apps can now add tickets or virtual cards to Apple Wallet.

Screen Time will offer daily and weekly activity reports that reveal the amount of time spent in individual apps and how often a device is picked up, among other things, USA Today said.

In other announcements, there have been rumours of a new version of the company's iPhone SE being in development which could also be unveiled at the conference, as could a rumoured cheaper version of the HomePod smart speaker.

The new Screen Time feature is one of the most significant add-ons with iOS 12. During their annual Worldwide Developers Conference, VP of software Craig Federighi notes how "we've all seen these like buttons and share buttons".

Parents will be able to set limits for time their children set in apps and get detailed reports regarding which apps are used.

New features help protect users' anonymity online.

In its new operating system, Apple will make it much harder for trackers to create a unique fingerprint by only presenting the trackers with web pages that have a simplified configuration and built-in fonts. The company said it's shutting down that tracking, unless the user decides to permit it, through a Safari browser update for Mac and iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads. The company has tried to distinguish itself from its peers on the privacy issue by stressing that it collects less information about its users than companies like Google and Facebook, so a little light bragging could be expected.

Apple also has said it will be rolling out tools to help users monitor and curb their smartphone usage.

Facebook's chief security officer Alex Stamos immediately took issue with the move, questioning on Twitter whether it was a serious effort to protect privacy or "just cute virtue signaling". But Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight, said Apple still has a lot of work to do to close the cap with Amazon and Google. For example, while the iPhone and iPad Twitter app is regularly updated with the social network's latest features, the Mac version gets few updates and is widely considered substandard. The watch will also automatically detect workouts without having to launch the fitness app. Learn even more from Apple's official iOS 12 preview here.
