The world may not meet tobacco reduction target, WHO warns

  • Around 315 million people smoke in China consuming more than a third of the world's cigarettes

Derek Yach, a global health expert and anti-smoking advocate for more than 30 years, is the President of Foundation for a Smoke-Free World. Hiking prices and taxes on tobacco products reduces consumption and generates revenue that can contribute to improving healthcare systems.

"In Myanmar, smoking and betel chewing have increased nationwide".

The tobacco-free standards were also implemented at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Regarding this year's theme of World No Tobacco Day "Tobacco Breaks Hearts" to raise public awareness of tobacco addiction's impact on cardiovascular health, Ocampo said, "Heart ailments are the diseases that predominate among smokers".

But as the video proceeds, it beats quicker and more smoke can be seen puffing from its valves - created to mimic being overworked. More than 6 million of those deaths are the result of direct smoking.

"WHO has estimated that tobacco use (smoking and smokeless) is now responsible for the death of about six million people across the world each year with numerous deaths occurring prematurely".

The Catawba River near Pleasant Gardens , near Marion, was at 14.4 feet, more than three feet above flood stage, U.S. Between 6 and 8 inches of rain fell in some areas of the mountains over the past 24 hours, officials reported .

Tobacco smoking is the single most preventable cause of death in the world. Aware of these risks, the tobacco industry has, for about 50 years, intensified research on ways to make tobacco products safer for adult consumers, protect the environment while ensuring that human and social capital costs are sustainable and productive. These interventions include protecting people from exposure to tobacco smoke; banning tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship; banning sales to minors; requiring health warnings on tobacco packaging; promoting tobacco cessation, and increasing tobacco taxes.

"The worldwide prevalence of tobacco smoking has decreased from 27 percent in 2000 to 20 percent in 2016, so progress has been made", Douglas Bettcher, director of the WHO's prevention of noncommunicable diseases department, told a news briefing. The report shows the pace of action in reducing tobacco demand and related death and disease is too slow and not keeping up with global and national commitments to control tobacco use.

WHO Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan says tobacco threatens the world.

A new World Health Organization report reveals that tobacco wastes contains 7,000 toxic chemicals that poison the environment, including human carcinogens; tobacco smoke emissions contribute thousands of tons of human carcinogens, toxicants and greenhouse gasses to the environment.

15 years later, the risk of coronary heart disease is that of a nonsmoker's.

Latest data from the WHO report indicates that there are around 1.1 billion smokers in the world today - the same number as at the turn of the century. These types of products eliminate the smoke and reduce the levels of harmful toxic chemicals while at the same time deliver the nicotine and ritual that millions of smokers look for.
