Scripps Bee Winner Out-Spells Record 515 Contestants

The victor: Karthik Nemmani, 14, an eighth-grader from the Dallas suburb of McKinney and a first-timer at the competition. The only reason Karthik made it to this year's national competition was through a wildcard program that was just instituted.

The 91st Scripps National Spelling Bee is slated to return to the National Harbor Convention Center in Maryland for its final round, where young children will recite a long roster of challenging words to become this year's champion Thursday.

Karthik won by correctly spelling the word: "koinonia". The tension and relief on the faces of the other competitors, including Nicholas Lee, 14.

Runner-up Naysa Modi, 12, from Frisco, Texas, was eliminated from the final round after she misspelled the word "bewusstseinslage", meaning a state of consciousness or a feeling devoid of sensory components, according to Merriam-Webster.

The victor of the spelling bee receives more than $40,000 in prize money.

Her close friend, Jashun Paluru of West Lafayette, Indiana, finished fourth, spelling with flair and spending most of his time in between words chatting animatedly with Naysa.

Abhijay Kodali, 11, of Flower Mound, Texas, tied for third, lasting until Round 16. The final, which had 16 spellers, went on for 18 rounds.

Erin Howard, 13, of Huntsville, Ala., who tied for seventh previous year, misspelled "funest", adding an extra "e" at the end of the word. The hundreds of precocious spellers, ranging in age from 8 to 15, stepped out from all 50 states.

Scripps' Spelling Bee additionally offers an interactive way to seemingly view the competition outside of ESPN.

"I had confidence, but I didn't think it would really happen", said Nemmani, an eighth-grader, adding that he knew the word as soon as he heard it.

On Wednesday night, bee officials used test scores to determine that 41 spellers would move on to the finals, to compete under the glaring lights of prime-time television.

Yet amid the bigger Bee, returning spellers continued their dominance, even though a first-time competitor won.
