India Will Buy Iranian Crude Despite US Sanctions

The United States on Monday said it is working on adding more flexibility to its law that sanctions countries like India for buying Russian weapon systems, but sounded off New Delhi against going ahead with the Rs 40,000 crore deal for five S-400 defence missile systems with Moscow. While US defence secretary Jim Mattis has already argued for "national security waivers and relief" from CAATSA for countries like India, Thornberry said the Congress and Senate were also working on measures and language to ease Indian concerns.

India and Iran have long-standing political and economic ties, with Iran one of India's top oil suppliers."Zarif briefed about the discussions that Iran has undertaken with parties to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action following the United States decision to withdraw from the Agreement", said an Indian government statement, without elaborating. Asked about the USA move to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions at a news conference on May 28, Swaraj said that India's policy was to honor only United Nations sanctions, not sanctions imposed by individual countries.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj sat for talks in New Delhi on various regional and worldwide issues on Monday.

The statement said parties involved in the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, "should engage constructively for peaceful resolution of the issues that have arisen with respect to the agreement".

He asked me that this time do not be 3-0 down. "I don't think he will come to the final, but of course he will watch the game". For many Africans who make it in the West, the desire to do well for those back home keeps them going.

Last month, India imported an average 640,000 bpd of Iranian crude, the highest since October 2016 and up by 49 percent from March.

Washington has also tightened sanctions against Venezuela over the controversial re-election of President Nicolas Maduro.

India has other interests in Iran, in particular a commitment to build the port of Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman. The US officials have reportedly asked India to "reconsider" its decision to acquire S-400.

Swaraj said India would continue trading with Venezuela, but there was no plan to use a cryptocurrency Caracas recently created to pay for oil. "We will see which medium we can use for trade", she said.
