Trump tweeted earlier Saturday that a summit with Kim, if it does happen, will likely take place on June 12 in Singapore as originally planned.

The negotiations come amid doubts over a potential landmark meeting between Kim and US President Donald Trump. On Thursday, the White House called off a June 12 summit with Kim in Singapore, citing "tremendous anger and open hostility" from Pyongyang.

The quickly arranged meeting seemed to demonstrate Kim's urgency to secure a summit with Trump, which may provide his best shot at saving his economy from crushing sanctions and win security assurances in a region surrounded by enemies, analysts say.

The fragile balance was first tipped on May 15, after North Korea said it would cut off talks over military exercises being conducted in the region by the US and South Korea. In the same bombastic statement, Pyongyang also threatened a nuclear showdown. "We'd like to do it", he said.

Earlier this month, North Korea also released three USA citizens, Kim Hak-song, Tony Kim and Kim Dong-chul, who had been detained in the country on charges of espionage and suspicion of "hostile acts".

"The two leaders candidly exchanged views about making the North Korea-U.S. summit a successful one and about implementing the Panmunjom Declaration", South Korea's presidential spokesman said in a statement.

Cheong Wa Dae refused to confirm any details of the latest inter-Korean summit, saying President Moon himself will explain the outcome in a press conference from 10 a.m. on Sunday. Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, held meetings with his South Korean counterparts in 2000 and 2007.

North Korea then surprised many by responding to Trump's bombshell move without insults or bluster.

Moon told reporters after Sunday's briefing that "The real issue for the Chairman Kim is not his firm determination for the complete denuclearization".

Previous talks between U.S. and North Korean officials - including two meetings between Kim and Pompeo - have failed to yield clarity on the denuclearization issue.

Saturday's meeting was only the fourth time - but the second in a month - that leaders from the North and South have met. Trump later tweeted that the two countries were "having very productive talks".

Pictures released by the Blue House showed Moon shaking hands with both Kim and his sister Kim Yo Jong, who has played a major public role in recent talks with the South, including leading a delegation across the border during February's Winter Olympics.

So we're looking at June 12th in Singapore.

Right now, it appears so based on Trump's comments Saturday night.

Nothing that North Korea borders Russia, Putin said resolution "is of critical importance, especially when the situation is on the brink of war".

Analysts say Mr. Kim's diplomatic outreach in recent months after a flurry of nuclear and missile tests in 2017 indicates he is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and the global legitimacy the summit with Mr. Trump would provide.
