The storm's sustained winds are expected to intensify to 65 miles per hour over the next three days, as it approaches the northern Gulf coast.

The National Hurricane Center reports that the tropical disturbance over the Yucatan Peninsula is gradually becoming better defined and now has a higher chance of development, CBS Miami reports.

Hurricane season doesn't begin until June 1, but that doesn't mean we won't see some action Saturday or Sunday.

On the forecast track, Alberto is expected to pass near the eastern coast of the Yucatan peninsula Friday night and be near the western tip of Cuba Saturday morning.

There are now no severe weather alerts for Northeast Florida, but rip current warnings were issued Friday along Florida's Gulf Coast area expected to be extended to the East Coast over the weekend. If you live in a flood-prone area keep a close eye on water levels this weekend and never attempt to drive through flooded roads.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical system that will bring heavy rain to Florida and the Gulf Coast states by Memorial Day.

Tropical Storm Watches have been posted for Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties in South Mississippi.

Areas along the coast can expect 3-6 inches of rain, with even more expected in the coastal Carolinas and southern Florida.

The main threat for Central Georgia and the Southeast will be heavy rain and flooding.

At 1000 AM CDT (1500 UTC), the center of Subtropical Storm Alberto was located near latitude 19.7 North, longitude 86.8 West. Right now, early forecasts project that the number of storms will be higher than average, and several forecasts indicate an above-average likelihood that a major hurricane will make landfall in the Caribbean, the Gulf Coast, or the US East Coast.

"Its mostly looking like a heavy rain event", National Weather Service meteorologist John McMichael said. Wet weather will be most likely in the late afternoon and evening. Gusty winds, rip currents and large waves also are expected into Memorial Day.
