President Trump Says North Korea Summit Still Possible

Many believe the US had failed to understand either of the Koreas.

In many respects, what North Korea is doing is throwing the ultimate Hail Mary pass-and Donald Trump is 90 yards downfield with three all-start cornerbacks defending him.

While the statement may keep the possibility of a summit alive, there were also hints in North Korea's response to Trump that Pyongyang was willing to walk away.

A senior White House official said the North had reneged on its promises ahead of the summit, including a pledge to allow worldwide inspectors to monitor its explosive destruction of its nuclear test site.

Mattis said diplomats were still working to try to put the Singapore summit back on track. There's a possibility yet that Trump's leap-without-looking reality television-style high-stakes diplomacy could yield a good deal, if not a flawless one, but the United States continues to find itself bogged down with unrealistic expectations, setting the stage for failure in Singapore.

Mike Pompeo, Trump's new secretary of state, shuttled back and forth to North Korea; John Bolton, Trump's supremely hawkish national security advisor, concentrated his efforts on emphasising that the U.S. was free to act as it saw fit, and unilaterally if needed.

There were a series of "broken promises" from Pyongyang, the official told reporters, including when the White House sent the deputy chief of staff to Singapore to meet North Korean diplomats ahead of the summit.

"Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea".

Seoul is perhaps the most eager for the meeting to take place.

After the North Korean statement, Trump shifted gears.

Yesterday, North Korea destroyed its Punggye-ri nuclear test site - including three nuclear tunnels, observation buildings, witnessed by worldwide journalists. In recent days, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the de facto leader of the "free world", went so far as stating that Europe can no longer rely on the U.S. as a source of protection. "Only time (and talent) will tell!" the United States president said in a tweet.

It follows a whirlwind 24 hours which saw Mr Trump cancel his highly anticipated meeting with the North Korean leader, which was due to take place on 12 June. The White House on Thursday cited a prolonged period of silence as one of the factors in scrapping the June 12 date.

On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha that, despite Trump pulling out of the summit, the U.S.

USA officials also complained North Koreans did not show up to preparatory meetings and would not answer calls.

Trump's announcement was met by a melange of puzzlement, outrage and profound anxiety across the world.

"It's clear he didn't know what he was getting into", the California Democrat said.

Others, like a young woman waiting for a bus, hold on to the idea that Kim Jong-un has changed.

Nearby, across the street from the U.S. Embassy, about 20 more protesters aligned with South Korea's leftist People's Democracy Party (PDP) had gathered with placards bearing images of Trump sporting Nazi regalia and surrounded by warplanes. And what did the US and South Korea offer in return? "Just like they are coming to the defense of MS 13 thugs, saying that they are individuals & must be nurtured, or asking to end your big Tax Cuts & raise your taxes instead. Dems have lost touch!"

US officials appeared to be pressing ahead in the belief that the summit remains on the table. "I personally believe, having talked to the president as of yesterday, that he's going to bring this to conclusion in his first term".

North Korea had sharply criticized suggestions by Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, and Vice President Mike Pence that it could share the fate of Libya if it did not swiftly surrender its nuclear arsenal.
