"Apparently, sleeping in on the weekends can be a real help", said Åkerstedt, a professor and director of the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University.

They found that people under 65 who only managed to snooze for an average of five hours or less in the week but then slept for eight hours or more over the weekend did not have an increased risk of death compared with individuals who slept at least six to seven hours every night.

According to Bustle: "The researchers divided the people into several groups: Short sleepers, who tended to sleep for fewer than five hours per night; medium sleepers, who slept around seven hours per night; and long sleepers, who slept for nine hours or more per night".

It found that those under the age of 65 who got five hours' sleep or less, seven days a week, had a 65% higher mortality rate than those getting six or seven hours every day.

Staying in the position for 10 minutes helps to calm down your mind, and prepare you for a restful night's sleep, she said.

However, research has often overlooked what happens on your days off, said sleep researcher Torbjörn Åkerstedt, co-author of a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research.

For those over 65, the researchers found no association between sleep durations and mortality risk.

Two dead, 18 injured in Italy train accident
One of many much less significantly injured was reported to be a crew member, whereas the others have been passengers. Later, one of two critically injured people who were flown by helicopter to a hospital died, ANSA said.

Failing to get to sleep early can mean you don't get a consistent eight hours a night.

Watch out, because sleeping over 8 hours a day also raises the mortality rate by 25% compared to those that regularly sleep for 6-7 hours.

"I suspected there might be some modification if you included also weekend sleep, or day-off sleep", he said, adding: "The assumption in this is that weekend sleep is a catch-up sleep".

While the study did not investigate the link between sleep patterns and mortality rates, Åkerstedt said it was possible little sleep had a negative effect on the body, while consistently lengthy sleep could be a sign of underlying health problems. But channeling your inner cat and sleeping too much can be just as bad for your health, studies have found.

The Sleep Council, an organisation promoting healthier sleep, says shut-eye is essential to "replenish energy stores" and "make repairs, while our minds organise and store the memories of the day before", on its website.

Sleep is something you need to replenish regularly if you don't want to hurt your health.
