  • Amazon's Alexa records and shares private conversation

Embassy Edge residents will be able to control smart home appliances, play music, and even order products from Amazon.in by just speaking to Alexa. "We are very happy to provide Amazon Echo experience to residents and better our offerings here at Embassy".

Amazon's Alexa has been caught recording the private conversation of a Portland-based coupled in the USA, and then sending that recording to someone else in the family's contact list.

Say it ain't so, Alexa?

Danielle, who only wanted to go by her first name, said "Alexa" sent recordings of a conversation between her and her husband to one of her husband's employees in Seattle.

The report invigorated privacy concerns as online devices like the Amazon Echo become omnipresent in homes. The employee then sent the husband audio files of the chats that the Echo had sent, and the family promptly pulled the plug on all of them. "Unplug that device now", the colleague said. "I felt invaded... A total privacy invasion. Immediately I said, 'I'm never plugging that device in again, because I can't trust it'". Amazon blamed the "extremely rare" incident on an unlikely sequence of events.

An engineer with the company apologized to Danielle. Unlike many online publications, we don't have a paywall or run banner advertising, because we want to keep our journalism open, without influence or the need to chase traffic.

But the truth is that if Alexa devices can easily be turned into bugs if there is a hardware or software mistake and we are willing to bet that in its haste to constantly update its devices Amazon let a big mistake through.

Not only that, but what kind of audio-forwarding features are built into these devices?

Last year, the company received demands from U.S. police authorities seeking audio files from Alexa related to a murder investigation.

A couple in Portland, Oregon joked that their Amazon Alexa might be listening in to their private conversations.

Amazon says its Echo device kept asking for commands and then kept mishearing them. Amazon confirmed a report by a local television station KIRO 7 in Seattle on Thursday, and said that the Echo device misunderstood pieces of the conversation as commands, causing it to "wake up" and think that it was being instructed to send a message. "At which point, Alexa said out loud 'To whom?'" according to the statement.

"We are evaluating options to make this case even less likely".
