Pope reportedly told gay man 'God made you this way'

  • The Catholic church considers homosexuality to be

Juan Carlos Cruz, who according to The Guardian spoke with the pope about two weeks ago, said the issue of his sexuality arose because some priests in Latin America have sought to disparage his character, some accusing him of lying about the abuse and others accusing him of being a pervert.

If confirmed, this would represent a groundbreaking shift from the traditional stance of the Catholic Church on homosexuality.

Cruz then reportedly told a media outlet, in an interview, just how Pope Francis assured him.

"It goes beyond 'who am I to judge?' to 'you are loved by God, '" Lamb told the newspaper. God made you that way and loves you as you are and I don't mind. "God made you like this and loves you like this and it doesn't matter to me".

If reported accurately, the pope's comments mark a distinct break from over 2,000 years of Catholic teaching, which considers homosexuality "objectively disordered" and in contradiction to God's law.

Cruz, who was abused as a child by the Rev. Fernando Karadima, Chile's most notorious pedophile priest, told the paper that his sexual orientation came up during the discussion because he has been targeted for being gay after speaking out about his abuse.

Cruz confirmed that they did speak about homosexuality, and that he explained to the Pope that he is not a bad person and tries not to hurt anybody.

After telling the pope he was gay, "He said to me, 'Juan Carlos that's not a problem".

Lawyers say Texas school gunman was 'confused'
The tight-knit community of Santa Fe is still reeling from a tragedy that many thought would never happen in their small town. Shana finally stood up to him and embarrassed him in class, Ms Rodriguez said in a private message to the "Los Angles Times".

The comments were welcomed by some people, who praised the Pope's open-mindedness.

Pope Francis said he wanted to apologise personally to them for his accusation that they were spreading false statements about a bishop they said had covered up for a paedophile priest. But I have met many people who have had different experiences; people who have been damaged by being told to deny their sexuality or who feel rejected by God. We are called to follow Christ's teachings within His church to embrace Christ and find redemption for our shortfalls, whatever they are.

In meeting with one of the whistle-blowers of the clergy sex abuse scandal in Chile, Pope Francis apparently both apologized for the abuse and cover-up and also affirmed the victim's sexual orientation. "Sin is sin", Francis told reporters in 2016, according to Crux. "When they say 'Oh, how great, how great, how great, ' that's not useful".

Some are unconvinced that the Pope has said anything out of line. "This is what Jesus would do today".

Only a feminine Church will be able to have "fruitful attitudes", in accordance with the intention of God, who chose "to be born of a woman in order to teach us the path of woman".

Francis DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, which advocates for equality for LGBT Catholics, said the pope's comments were "tremendous" and would do a lot of good.
