  • A Congolese health worker instructs residents about washing their hands as a preventive measure against Ebola in Mbandaka Democratic Republic of Congo

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is deploying 25 epidemiologists, laboratory experts, and anthropologists to support the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) efforts to control the recent Ebola virus outbreat in Mbandaka and Bikoro. It also sent more than 35 vaccination experts to Mbandaka on 19 May, including 16 mobilized from West Africa for their previous experience in the field.

The health agencies, in a joint statement, denied the reports which claim that health authorities in the country are trying to suppress information about an Ebola outbreak.

The city's congestion and connection with other regions potentially makes it a much more risky launch pad for a deadly disease spread primarily through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of infected people.

According to the World Health Organization report, over 7,500 doses of the rVSV-ZEBOV Ebola vaccine, donated by Merck, have been deployed to the DRC for use in the northwestern Equator Province where 46 suspected, probable and confirmed Ebola cases and 26 deaths have been reported, as of May 18.

Some global health experts have expressed concern privately that the US response would be minimized given President Trump's disparaging and isolationist comments about Ebola during the 2014 epidemic.

The vaccine, provided by USA company Merck, is still in the test stages but it was effective toward the end of the Ebola epidemic that killed more than 11,300 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia from 2014 to 2016.

"Indeed, the funds from the Federal Government is going to complement our actual participation in Russian Federation".

"Controlling a virus once it has reached a large urban area is particularly challenging".

"I'm pleased to say that vaccination is starting as we speak". But the next few days will be critical, she said, to prevent the virus from spreading to another country, and for personnel on the ground in the outbreak areas to keep up with contact tracing. In what is the ninth Ebola outbreak since 1976, the DRC has learned how to effectively manage outbreaks and reduce fatalities.

The Ebola virus is transmitted to humans from animals and is estimated by the World Health Organization to have a 50-percent fatality rate.

Front-line workers are especially at risk of contracting the virus, which spreads in contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, including the dead.

The city of around 1.2 million people lies on the Congo River, where it is a transport hub to Brazzaville and Kinshasa downstream and to Bangui, upstream. These include fever, headache, muscle pain, weakness and fatigue and become more serious - diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and unexplained bleeding or bruising.

Early diagnosis and treatment is the best solution for patients who have contracted the Ebola virus. The disease is fatal in up to 90 percent of cases.
