Sunday's developments came in the wake of reports that a longtime USA intelligence source assisted the investigation into Russian election interference now overseen by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Trump tweeted that he would officially demand Monday that the department "look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes - and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!" That followed a New York Times report on Wednesday that said at least one government informant reportedly met with then-campaign adviser George Papadopoulos and then-foreign policy adviser Carter Page.

An FBI informant was in touch with some members of Trump's campaign ahead of the 2016 election about their contacts with Russians as part of an operation that has since grown into an investigation of alleged Russian meddling in polls being conducted by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Representative Devin Nunes, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has asked the DOJ to turn over documents disclosing why the FBI launched an investigation into the Trump campaign.

He repeatedly claimed that the investigation has so far yielded no results in its efforts to find proof of collusion between the campaign and Russian Federation, and instead suggested the probe should now look into "corruption in the Hillary Clinton Campaign".

"We don't have any evidence at present that suggests that the Federal Bureau of Investigation actually infiltrated the campaign under false pretences, had somebody working for Trump and had access into getting confidential communication that wouldn't have been obtained if they weren't part of the campaign itself", said Fein, speaking from Washington, DC.

There was speculation from USA media commentators that Mr Trump's demand was an attempt to force senior justice officials into resigning.

Rudy Giuliani, Trump's lawyer, said that the president would be "walking into a trap" if he agreed to be interviewed by Mueller's team without clarification on the role of the informant.

It is not certain if Trump will sit for an interview with Mueller, though the president has publicly said he would.

Giuliani acknowledged, though, the timeline could change significantly if the president did not cooperate.

A number of those charges were related to Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 election, but none of them has been extended to collusion allegations.

Mr Sessions recused himself of the Russian election meddling investigation, meaning he can not shape its course, while Mr Rosenstein is overseeing the probe. "It took place very early on, and long before the phony Russia Hoax became a "hot" Fake News story", Trump had tweeted, adding: "If true - all time biggest political scandal!". Rod Rosenstein: where are the documents?

President Trump called the FBI Director and Deputy Attorney General to the White House Wednesday. "The Justice Department is independent and serves the American people", Feinstein tweeted.

The inspector general will expand his probe into the handling of investigations during 2016 election season to include any "irregularities" involving FBI or Justice Department "tactics" - language vague enough to be essentially meaningless. Horowitz also said that he would examine other matters that might arise from his work. Page has been on the FBI's radar since 2013, when Russians reportedly first tried to recruit him. In response, the Justice Department moved to defuse the confrontation by asking its watchdog to investigate whether there was inappropriate surveillance.
