US Air Force apologises for Yanny/Laurel tweet about Afghan war

  • The US Air Force just ruined the 'Laurel or Yanny' meme

The initial tweet, which was apparently meant to be a joke about the viral trend, said the Taliban in Farah, Afghanistan would have much rather heard "Yanny" or "Laurel" than the sound of approaching A-10 Warthogs sent this week to repel the insurgents. The tweet came after days of intense fighting in the Afghan city of Farah, where the U.S. military used the A-10 to provide air support to Afghan forces.

"The Taliban Forces in Farah city #Afghanistan would much rather have heard #Yanny or #Laurel than the deafening #BRRRT they got courtesy of our #A10", the tweet said.

In an apparent attempt at humor, the Air Force linked the debate to this week's Taliban assault on Farah city in western Afghanistan, near the border with Iran. Army Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, a spokesperson for US forces in Afghanistan, told Military Times that Afghan planes "conducted the majority of strikes".

Suicidal Thoughts, Attempts On The Rise Among Young People: 'It's A Critical Public-Health Crisis Right Now'
The study shows that the children ages 5-17 years attempt suicide due to suicidal thoughts at USA children's hospitals. For the study, a database of visits at 49 children's hospitals for kids aged 5 to 17 were analyzed.

The battle in Farah has been intense as the Taliban has launched a series of attacks to take the city. The Taliban said that two more areas had fallen to their fighters: Jaghatu district in Ghazni Province in the country's southeast, and Dara-e Bom in Badghis Province in the northwest, according to a WhatsApp statement from the Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.

The tweet sought to link, somewhat awkwardly, the conflict to an internet debate over an audio file in which listeners can hear either the word "Laurel" or "Yanny". But the Air Force tweet received criticism from some on social media who said it made light of military violence.

"The "#BRRT" in the deleted tweet likely refers to the sound made by the A-10 jet's famous 30mm cannon.
