Scientists suggest someone is secretly making banned ozone-depleting chemical

  • Ozone layer in danger again after someone starts making CFCs

The study, which was published in Nature on Wednesday, suggests that new production of the chemical is being carried out by an identified source in East Asia.

But despite consistent efforts, certain banned chemicals responsible for ozone depletion continue to plague the environment.

The 1987 Montreal Protocol banned industrial aerosols such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that were chemically dissolving ozone, especially above Antarctica. As one of the most potentially risky and previously widespread CFCs, used in refrigerants, spray can propellant, styrofoam production, etc., this is a worrying substance to be making a resurgence.

What is even more troubling is that scientists are not sure at present why emissions of this gas are increasing.

CFC-11 is an ozone-depleting chemical whose phase out agreed upon in the '80s and has been under an worldwide ban since 2010.

The study, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, identified two possible culprits: industrial chemicals not covered by the Montreal Protocol called "very short-lived substances" (VSLSs), or climate change, which would be far more hard to resolve.

Emissions of one of the chemicals most responsible for the Antarctic ozone hole are on the rise, despite an global treaty that required an end to its production in 2010, a new NOAA study shows. However, a new study has found that emissions of a type of CFC has spiked by a shocking 25 percent since 2012, reports the Washington Post. Currently, the damage done to the ozone's recovery is minor, but if left unchecked, it could worsen the hole in the ozone layer.

Democrats Try to Hang Net Neutrality Vote on GOP in Midterms
But net-neutrality advocates argue that smaller companies that don't have the money to pay for fast lanes could suffer . The CTIA , USTelecom and the NCTA earlier sent a joint letter to senators asking them to vote against the measure.

Montzka and fellow researchers when considered a number of possible causes, they were comfortable to conclude that CFC emissions must have gone up after 2012. Which makes it look a whole lot like at least one country is producing the chemical again and lying about it, because lots of agencies (like the NOAA, as shown here) and the United Nations monitor reported amounts of these chemicals.

As of now, the study points to the chemical originating from Eastern Asia, but that was the maximum information researchers could gather from the samples collected.

Stephen Montzka, at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Colorado, who along with colleagues made the discovery, said. Though concentrations of CFC11 in the atmosphere are still declining, they're declining more slowly than they would if there were no new sources, Montzka said.

Conclusion was based on other changes which were recorded in NOAA's measurements during the same period.

If not, then it will take substantially longer than anticipated for the ozone layer to recover.

CFCs and other molecules have mainly eroded ozone in the upper stratosphere, and over the poles. Unless the mysterious source is found and stopped, the recovery of the ozone layer could be slowed down by a decade.

The treaty has had sizable impact on preserving the ozone layer.
