Arab League calls for global probe into Israeli crimes

So far, 62 Palestinians have been killed and thousands were injured in violent clashes with Israeli forces along the Gaza border since Monday, in what was the deadliest escalation of violence in the region since 2014.

In a phone call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence in Gaza and spoke of the importance of protecting civilians and their right to protest.

Maliki also said members of the Arab League, whose foreign ministers gathered in Cairo on Thursday for an extraordinary meeting to discuss the issue, should summon USA ambassadors "to remind them of the Arab rejection of the US embassy's transfer to Jerusalem".

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the organisation should revise relations with the US, Guatemala and other countries that may recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move their embassies to the city.

Israel hit a Hamas base in an air raid on Thursday. "For many, especially those who lost a loved one, who will now suffer a permanent disability or who will need intensive rehabilitation, the impacts of recent violence will be felt for months and years to come".

Foreign ministers at an extraordinary meeting of the Arab League in Cairo called on the United Nations to form an global committee to investigate the killings. No injuries was reported on either side.

"The Israeli army struck targets belonging to Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip, including terrorist infrastructure and weapons-making facilities", the military said in a statement.

In 1967, before Israel's victory in the Six Day War, 196,000 Jews lived in Jerusalem, compared to only 55,000 Palestinian Muslims.
