  • REPORT: Bucks hire former Atlanta head coach Mike Budenholzer as new head coach

Mike Budenholzer has agreed to a four-year deal to become the next head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, reports say.

The head coach found success in his first four seasons in Atlanta, winning NBA coach of the year honors in 2014-15, but according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, he didn't like the direction of the team after surrendering his role as president of basketball operations for the 2017-18 season.

The other finalist for the job, San Antonio Spurs assistant Ettore Messina, was informed that he was out of the running on Wednesday, league sources said.

Milwaukee parted with Jason Kidd in January, and assistant coach Joe Prunty served the rest of the season as interim head coach.

With Budenholzer having joined the Bucks, the Raptors' search for a new coach continues onward.

Budenholzer flew to Milwaukee for the Wednesday morning meeting with the Bucks players.

Before the split, the Hawks gave Budenholzer permission to speak with the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks for their coaching openings.

Considered one of the NBA's best tacticians.

Budenholzer went 213-197 in his five seasons in Atlanta, leading the team to four playoff appearances before this season's 24-58 record. They had home-court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs, Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward were out for the Boston Celtics, youth figured to trip up the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Cavaliers needed seven games to get past the Indiana Pacers in the first round.
