During the ceremony, Netanyahu praised the Central American country for its long friendship and recognition of the Jewish State.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the embassy's opening on Wednesday in an office complex in west Jerusalem.

Guatemala has opened its new embassy in Jerusalem, becoming the second country to do so after the United States.

Guatemala is now the second country to move its Israeli embassy back to Jerusalem.

"We remember our friends, and Guatemala is our friend - then and now", Netanyahu said.

Paraguay and Honduras reportedly will be the next countries to relocate their embassies to Jerusalem.

Trump's move reversed decades of U.S. policy, upsetting the Arab world and Western allies.

In December 2017, Morales said that Guatemala had been "historically pro-Israel" and that they have considered them as allies since the time of its creation. "But today, I just want to say how delighted we are to have you".

"I thank President Jimmy Morales Cabrera of Guatemala for his courageous decision and am honored that we will be opening the embassy in the capital of Israel tomorrow".

On Monday, demonstrations turned deadly, and as of Tuesday 58 people had been killed and more than 2,700 injured by Israeli troops guarding the border, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. It says its actions are necessary to defend the border and stop mass infiltrations from the Palestinian enclave, which is run by Islamist movement Hamas.

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) slammed Guatemala for moving embassy to Jerusalem on Wednesday, saying it undermines the two-state solution principle.

The Palestinian Authority said Wednesday it was recalling its envoys to Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria after their ambassadors attended an Israeli reception marking the USA embassy move.

The Palestinians also withdrew their ambassador to the United States on Tuesday.
