  • Poor People's Campaign launches 40 days of protesting poverty

Police were told members of the group meant to protest "until they got arrested", Cavey said.

The campaign cast the protests as a "reignition" of the Poor People's Campaign, the 1968 movement started by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others to challenge racism, poverty and militarism.

The campaign wants a massive overhaul of voting rights laws, new programs to get people out of poverty, and measures to boost the economy in favor of working people.

Cheyna Roth reports on the rally by the Michigan Poor People's Campaign. And as Gillett said, and the group sang, "it's gone on far too long and we're not going to take it anymore".

The campaign plans to keep coming back to the Capitol every Monday.

Sylvia Orduno is with the campaign and the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization.

"We're living in an impoverished democracy", Barber said.

Dozens turned out today, singing and chanting for change.

The Poor People's Campaign has promised the largest non-violent direct action movement in US history with protests and teach-ins over the next 40 days, which they hope will spark a nationwide conversation and provoke lawmakers, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"There are a lot of distractions that go on in national politics these days, and the issues that we're here to represent are real issues that are nonpartisan and need to be heard", rally attendee Calvin Megginson said.
