Korea economically if it gets rid of nuclear weapons

  • North Koreans struggle for basic access to facilities and more than a quarter of children are stunted due to inadequate nutritious food the UN says

But North Korea has said it's willing to talk now because it's already succeeded in becoming a nuclear-armed state, fueling skepticism that the North would truly be willing to give those weapons up. During the talks, Kim Jong-un announced his intentions to shut down a nuclear test site in Punggye-ri.

Pompeo held a joint news conference with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha a day after he returned from a visit to North Korea with three Americans detained in the isolated nation. The two leaders will jointly prepare for the U.S.

He said he thinks he and Kim had a pretty good understanding between their countries about what the shared objectives of the upcoming US-North Korea summit are. Most recently, the US posed sanctions on North Korea when Kim refused to stop testing his nuclear weapons.

"While the North Koreans say that nuclear disarmament should proceed stage by stage, taking into account reciprocal steps and in the absence of a threat from the United States, the U.S. side insists on North Korea's transparent and unconditional denuclearization", the expert noted. Is he prepared to give up nuclear weapons in exchange for the kind of assurances that the U.S.is ready to provide?

USA officials had called for North Korea to take bold actions and concrete steps toward denuclearization. She says there can't be any daylight on this topic and on in particular the presence of US forces in her country. After her talks with Pompeo, she took pains to "emphasize again that the US military presence in Korea is a matter for the ROK-US alliance first and foremost". Now, she was here, by the way, also to plan for her president's trip to Washington later this month.

As the Trump-Kim summit nears, there are several concerns.

As it was reported earlier, Trump's meeting with Kim Jong-un is scheduled for the end of May - early June. It would be a complete denuclearization with a robust verification program. But he said he thinks Kim has a good understanding of what the USA means by all of that. In North Korea's bombastic rhetoric, "denuclearisation" has, for years, been a byword for U.S. troop withdrawals from South Korea - an idea that Kang appeared to reject. Of course that's what we're hearing from the USA side.

China looks forward to positive results from the meeting, said the spokesperson, adding that important steps must be taken to promote the denuclearization of the peninsula through political solutions to realize long-term stability in the region.

"The United States had preferred Geneva", the South Korean presidential official told reporters, requesting anonymity to discuss the arrangements for the summit meeting.
