Von Trier's new film, which stars Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman, follows the life of a serial killer in Washington over a period of a dozen years.

Personally, it's hard to put much belief in those who walked out.

One reportedly said to Kyle Buchanan of New York Magazine: "He mutilates Riley Keough, he mutilates children. and we are all there in formal dress expected to watch it?". According to reports, hundreds of viewers left the screening and called it "vomitive" and "vile", to name just a few of the most moderate comments.

Von Trier has also had a turbulent relationship with Cannes, where he was once banned following a 2011 press conference in which he - in jest - proclaimed himself a Nazi.

AAA Michigan: Statewide average gas prices up 7 cents
As of Sunday afternoon, the Colorado average was $2.72 a gallon, which is the cheapest in the Rockies region. Overall, the national average of gas prices has risen 15 cents per gallon during the last month.

One particularly brutal scene is said to show the killer blowing the heads of two young children with a hunting rifle.

Each murder is more grim and upsetting than the last, involving (and not limited to) violent bludgeoning, animal cruelty, sexualised violence against women, post-mortem mutilation and, most shockingly, the graphic murder of children. Meanwhile, over on IMDB, the movie has a solid 8.4, which is not bad at all. "I think there'll be a huge reaction to the film".

Von Trier seemed to taunt the festival in the film with images of Hitler and other mass-murdering dictators as the killer rhapsodises about icons of evil and the sound of German World World II Stuka dive-bombers. The House That Jack Built is a dark and sinister story, presented through a philosophical and occasional humorous tale. Nonetheless, IndieWire's Eric Kohn witnessed the crowd fête von Trier with a 10-minute standing ovation (as was Spike Lee earlier in the day for "BlacKkKlansman").

Danish director Lars von Trier has a bit of a reputation for controversy, one that he's fearless to pursue if his previous works such as Antichrist, Melancholia, or Nymphomaniac are anything to go by. In the end, it looks like The House That Jack Built might end up being shocking for the sake of being shocking and little else.
