Steven Gerrard explains Anfield exit after accepting Rangers role

  • Josh Windass of Rangers scores his sides first goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium

The Daily Record say that Rangers are planning a clearout of nine players, with Windass set to be one of the players axed, as Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard stamps his authority as new manager of the club.

But for now, the 37-year-old will continue to work with Liverpool's academy until the summer.

Arfield, 29, arrives with a wealth of Premier League experience under his belt with Sean Dyche's terrific Burnley team, while he also has top-flight Scottish experience with Falkirk, where he began his senior career.

Arfield made a decision to leave Burnley as his contract came to an end with the prospect of a new challenge under England and Liverpool legend Gerrard too tempting to turn down.

"I go this time with the supporters' blessing and everyone within the club's blessing because they see the opportunity, they see the size of Glasgow Rangers and how hard it would have been where I was to turn down".

'I am delighted to have added Scott Arfield to the squad for next season, ' Gerrard told Rangers.

Rangers ended the Scottish Premiership campaign with a 10-goal thriller against Hibernian, but the 5-5 draw wasn't enough to see them finish as best of the rest.

"This is a massive opportunity for myself and Gary McAllister to go to a huge football club and try to improve things in Glasgow".

"I'm going with the club's support and the club's backing - and I'm really excited to get started".

The Ibrox club saw their faint hopes of winning the SPL dashed after a humiliating 5-0 defeat to rivals Celtic last month.
