Iran condemns Israeli air strikes in Syria

  • Iran condemns Israeli air strikes in Syria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said that Iran had "crossed a red line" and Israel's action "was a consequence" of that.

Israel has called on the UN Security Council and secretary-general to condemn Iran's attack, but the Security Council remains deeply divided over Syria and is highly unlikely to issue a statement.

"They must remember that if it rains here it will pour over there and I hope that we finish this chapter and that everyone got the message", Lieberman said.

In February, Israel reported that an armed Iranian drone flew into its airspace, which it shot down.

Earlier, Israel carried out missile strikes in Syria on what it said was Iranian military targets, in retaliation to a rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights which, Israel said, was launched by the Iranian forces.

Israel has repeatedly targeted weapons shipments destined for Hezbollah, taking advantage of the group's thinly-spread fighters preoccupied by the war in Syria. The country's military said its Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted four of the rockets just after midnight yesterday, while the other 16 fell harmlessly in Syrian territory.

Iran has strongly condemned Israel's missile strikes on Iranian targets inside Syria. Israel is far from the only country concerned with Iranian interference in Middle East affairs.

Tehran is one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's major backers, alongside Russian Federation, in Syria's bloody seven-year civil war. The U.S., Israel and the Saudis could decide it's time to knock them completely out of the game and make a combined strike against their nuclear facilities and military.

As well as abandoning the nuclear agreement, Trump has controversially made a decision to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - a nod to Israel and and affront to Palestinians who claim part of the contested city. That revolution overthrew the monarchy in Iran and replaced it with the Islamic Republic.

Tributes aside, it was another flat atmosphere at the London Stadium. That's no mean achievement from where we started.

The suspected Israeli strike came after the IDF gave orders to open public bomb shelters in the Golan Heights after reports of "irregular Iranian movements" inside Syria.

There were no casualties on the Israeli side.

The Iranians no longer have a weak American administration in office that they can push around.

There may not be much Iran can do about President Trump's withdrawal from the nuclear deal, but across the Middle East, it has a variety of ways it can hit back at the United States and America's regional allies. Iran also funds Hamas and Hezbollah - terror groups dedicated to the destruction of Israel.

If anything, the lack of restrictions on the USA now should serve as a reminder to Iran that it's a bad time to cause trouble. Israel claimed that Iranian fighters had carried out that attack.

The events of recent days have marked the start of a new phase in a long-term Iranian-Israeli long-term conflagration.

Asked by "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan on Thursday whether the US had expected Iran to lash out after the White House decision to pull out of the nuclear deal, Vice President Mike Pence said the they had "been anticipating the potential for some Iranian reaction" since Israeli struck Iranian targets in Syria "a couple weeks ago". "To secure the border area, Israel may also take temporary, de facto control over rebel areas in the Syrian Golan Heights through air power and limited ground forces".

That is despite Israel's claims that it struck dozens of Iranian targets inside Syria early on Thursday as part of "Operation House of Cards". At the same time, Israel is trying to back up its diplomatic efforts aimed at getting Russian Federation and the United States to rein in Iranian expansionism.
